2018-09-27   Dr. Roald Eiselen: Digital Language Resources in South Africa

Dr Roald Eiselen is currently the Technical Manager at SADiLaR, prior to which he was actively involved in the development of text technologies for the South African languages, at the North-West University’s Centre for Text Technology.

The South African government recently established the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) as a National research infrastructure. The aim the Centre is to enable and support research and development in the domains of language technology and digital language scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. SADiLaR supports the creation, management, and distribution of language resources, including software and language technologies, in the eleven official languages of South Africa.

In my talk I will give a brief overview of the current South African landscape as it relates to the development of language resources and technologies, as well as digital humanities in general. From this overview, I will describe the establishment and activities of SADiLaR, as well as the medium term planning for the activities at the Centre. Lastly, I will do some demonstrations of the technologies and resources already available from SADiLaR.
