The chair for natural language processing at the University of Leipzig is a department at the Computer Science Institute of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. Unlike computational linguistics, it is part of Applied Computer Science. The focus is on automatic processing of natural language texts – irrespectively of the particular language – with the aim to automatically extract as much as possible knowledge (linguistic and non-linguistic) that is implicitly represented in natural language texts. Special attention is given to the automatic extraction of semantic relations, their representation and application in information retrieval and knowledge management.

For the bachelor and master courses in Computer Science at the University of Leipzig, the department is offering a number of courses on Computer Science for text and language applications, including an introduction to natural language processing and language engineering, information retrieval, and content and knowledge management.
