Data Mining and Value Creation
Research project on the economic value of data and digitization of Saxon companies
The joint project of the Fraunhofer Centre for International Management and Knowledge Economics IMW and the University of Leipzig is concerned with the question of how companies can make even greater use of digitization for their own purposes. Over the next four years, both partners intend to develop new methods and suitable software solutions to scientifically measure and analyse the economic value of data. Among other things, the Leipzig scientists have set themselves the goal of generating new knowledge and economic success for these companies from the digital information that Saxon industrial companies gain. The project is supported by the State of Saxony.
Prof. Dr. Gerik Scheuermann and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Heyer from the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Leipzig are responsible for the project. “We focus on the following questions: What data is available to the companies involved? How do Saxon companies use these currently and what demand and willingness are emerging for new ways of data analysis and use,” says Prof. Dr. Scheuermann. In the first year of the research project, the cross-institutional research team concentrates on taking stock of the situation in Saxony’s small and medium-sized enterprises. Prof. Dr. Heyer: “We then integrate data analysis into the programming of software and IT tools used in companies. We develop process chains and algorithms to generate added value from text data for the companies that have this text data”.
